About this blog title

I cannot tell you how many times I have shown up at events with a couple of cameras around my neck, a gadget bag full of odds & ends and a lighting kit and have been asked that question. If it happened once every few years, that would be one thing. But it happens a LOT. It's like getting pulled over by the police and he's standing there with uniform, gun, flashing lights and asking him "Are you a cop?" I would love to come back with a witty reply, such as "No, I am Jesus. Don't you recognize my beard?" However, I cannot be that rude.

Snow Sculptors at Dry Hill Ski Area, Watertown NY: Photos

The photos presented here were taken yesterday (Saturday), January 25, 2025 at the Dry Hill Ski Area. The snow sculptures were created as part of Watertown Snow Town Festival. The event wrapped up this evening with a closing ceremony and fireworks. I didn't attend that.

By the way, this is me, photo taken by Jerry Merrill.

Beach Creature Art at Wilson's Bay, Cape Vincent, NY

Beach sculpture, Wilson's Bay, Cape Vincent, NY

Had a bad nights sleep last night that followed a wonderful family get together at our home in Chaumont, NY. Consequently got up later than usual this morning. It was a lovely Summer day, breezy and a temp around 80 degrees. Late this afternoon we decided to take a drive to one of our swimming spots, Wilson's Bay, Cape Vincent, NY.   We discovered this somewhat eerie artwork. The artist unknown. I love it and find it inspiring.

Most years we go to this beach many times through the summer. One of our favorite spots. This Summer was different. Many, many days of rain, the Better Half dealing with some health issues, me putting extra time in at our Clay St house readying it for sale. So today the weather was exceptionally nice and the discovery of this artwork made this day special.

My iPhone reports I walked 4,621 steps today.

Jesus Christ Sculpture by Veronica Terrillion, Easter 2024

Jesus sculpture by Veronica Terrillion, Croghan, NY.  photo by Gary Walts

It is Easter Sunday 2024. A couple months ago I snapped this photo of Jesus as sculpted by the late folk artist Veronica Terrillion, Croghan, NY. It its part of her "Woman Made Garden" that has fallen into a certain amount of neglect. Many years ago I met with her a number of times. Once was to photograph Her and her artwork for Adirondack Life Magazine.  Much of her work is now gone and what remains is overgrown and showing the wear of time and weather. However, it still remains inspiring and memorable.

Jesus Sculpture by Veronica Terrillion Croghan NY

I present here a photo I snapped on March 7, 2024. It is a cement sculpture of Jesus Christ created by Veronica Terrillion. t is at the home she built in Croghan, NY. Trrillion did in 2003. Not a lot remains of her "woman made garden". What is left is weathered but still vibrant and beautiful.

On this particular day I was doing some work in one of our apartments at Clay St, Watertown. It was sun shiny and nice outside. At 1:00 I contacted the better half and suggested I drop what I was doing and we take a drive. So we went to Lowville to O'Brien's Farm to buy some cheese curd. Then we drove to Croghan and bought some Croghan Bologna at the Croghan Meat Market. Then we drove by Terrillion's place. Years ago I did a couple of photo stories about her and her art for the Post-Standard newspaper. I later photographed her for Adirondack Life Magazine.

Snow sculptors at work in Watertown, NY during annual Snow Town USA festival.
Today I finished trimming out the new door at our Clay St. apartment house.

After that I swung by the Watertown Fair Grounds to see how the snow sculptures were doing.

The snow sculptures are part of the annual SnowTown USA event. Scroll down to see more snow sculpture photos.

Finished putting trim around Clay St door today.

Snow Sculptures and Cold Weather

Snow sculpturing at Thompson Park, Watertown, NY, a Snowtown Festival event.

This afternoon I snapped a few photos of snow scultors working at Thompson Park, Watertown, NY.  The temperature was in single or negative digits. Not sure. Overnight the temperature went down to 31 below zero. At this writing at 10:00pm it is now 19 degrees in Chaumont. No matter what, It was cold work outdoors today.

This day is also the 4th day that the Better Half has been home from the Carthage Rehabilitation Center. She is doing very well. Now all to sleep on her side, either side, which is a major improvement. However, doing so makes her broken leg quite sore. At least it's bearable and we see progress, light at the end of the tunnel.

Gary Walts Photos: Visit to artist / sculptor Will Salisbury, Omar, NY

Here are some photos I snapped during a visit to artist Will Salisbury's home and shop in Omar, NY. I spent about 3 hours with him this past Friday, January 7, 2022. He has several projects going on and has a couple of people working for him. Will has some ongoing health issues that have been a challenge. Instead of slowing or stopping him he manages to soldier on and get things done.
